The Spiritual Naturalist Society works to spread awareness of spiritual naturalism as a way of life, develop its thought and practice, and help bring together like-minded practitioners in fellowship.
Good job guys. I was expecting for a first podcast just some definitions of spiritual naturalism and some general conversation, but you got into some deeper places in 28 minutes. It looks like this will be good!
Thanks Aron!
Consider posting transcripts. Hearing challenged spiritual naturalists may want to enjoy!
Thanks Eric, we would love to do that. We will need to get some more volunteers to help with these things, and I make sure we keep this great idea in mind as we become better able to do so.
What a wonderful program. Thanks so much. I’ve been reading/following several web sites related to Spiritual Naturalism, Religious Naturalism and Naturalistic Paganism. The primary challenge for these communities resides in the fact that they are virtual communities rather than face-to-face communities. I suspect that most people who are drawn to Spiritual Naturalism rather than simply thinking of themselves as atheists or agnostics do so because they seek community and some sense of identity and practice. What’s a Spiritual/Religious Naturalist to do other than join the nearest UU congregation? That’s a problematic option because so much of UU practice reflects its Protestant roots — hymns, clergy who are referred to as “Reverend,” sermons, even using the term “church.” Solitary practice, crafting one’s own rituals that celebrate awe and connection to the natural world and to other people, can be very empowering. But traditional religions thrive, in part, because they build face-to-face communities. How Spiritual Naturalism can do this seems to be a central challenge.
That said, this site and this organization seem to combine the intellectual and emotional aspects of Spiritual Naturalism better than any other that I know.
Thanks so much for your kind comments, Chris! I agree that more local gatherings will be very helpful. One of the reasons we are trying to reach out and grow our larger community, is that it helps us find where clusters of people close to one another are. We hope to help facilitate their coming together with materials, links, etc. Please check out our local group center on this site to keep up with our progress, and be sure to join a hub if you are close to a current one…

As more people become members we will be aware of where to form more hubs. And, as these become more populous, it will make local groups more feasible. Until then (and even beyond) we will always be here as a virtual community and resource for both individuals and groups! 🙂
So glad that SNS has started a podcast! I’m always looking for podcasts to listen to while working at home, good to know I have another one to add to my list. Great job!
Thanks for the kind words of support Ryan! We hope it will be helpful and interesting for everyone 🙂
I enjoyed listening to it.
Thanks a lot.
