While on vacation not long ago, my wife and I dropped in at a butterfly conservatory in Western Massachusetts. It was magical, with butterflies flittering all around us. My wife said it reminded her of being inside an animated Disney movie. A butterfly even landed on my shoulder.
I did wonder if butterfly “zoos” were ethical. A Wikipedia page on commercial butterfly breeding makes it seem innocuous, with the main issue being the practice of releasing non-native butterflies into the wild. So as long as you visit a sanctuary that keeps the butterflies inside, it seems okay.
You probably don’t want insects inside your house, but outside they’re not so bad (except for mosquitoes). So perhaps take a moment to admire our invertebrate relatives.
MINDFULNESS OF BUTTERFLIES AND OTHER INSECTS
Start by noticing your emotions when you encounter the words “butterfly” and “insect.” Does one word inspire warmth? Does the other inspire repulsion or even fear? How do these emotions manifest in your body?
If you’re lucky enough to have a flower garden, they are a great place to look for butterflies. If not, there may be a nearby park with a display of flowers. While you are patiently waiting for butterflies to arrive, be mindful of the blossoms.
Now, a butterfly flits by. They are quick, but when they land on a flower, they take some time to feed. Keep an eye on them until they depart. Next, perhaps a bee buzzes by. Assuming you’re not allergic to bees, remain still, watch and listen. They work hard. Isn’t that something to admire?
Cast your eyes down to the ground. Do any ants march past? If you’re courageous enough, place your hand in the ant’s path and let it climb over you. Does it tickle?
The lives of insects are short, rarely lasting as long as a year. Humans have lives that span many generations of other animals. This is something to feel grateful for. When stress gets to you, take a step back and consider how lucky we were to be born human beings. And close your eyes and picture butterflies.
